Blueprint helps homeowners find and compare ADU and backyard-home builders. Hiring a contractor is one of the largest checks most people will ever write — and the difference between a licensed, bonded builder and an unverifiable one is the whole decision. This page explains where our listing data comes from, how we verify it, and how we keep the directory independent.

How We Source Builder Data

Every builder listing is compiled from publicly available sources, in order of priority:

  1. State contractor-license records — where a state publishes its license rolls (California's CSLB, for example), we pull license number, license status, classification, bond amount and surety, workers'-compensation status, and expiration date directly from the public record.
  2. The builder's own website — services, project types, service area, and contact details published by the company itself.
  3. Google Business profiles — addresses, phone numbers, and location data.

Not every state publishes license data in a usable public form. Where we can cross-check a license, the listing shows it. Where we can't, we leave those fields empty rather than guessing — and you should verify licensing with your state board before signing anything.

How We Verify Listings

  • New listings are checked against the sources above before they are published.
  • License-backed listings carry the data as of our last pull from the state record, including the expiration date shown.
  • We re-check listings on a rolling basis. Builders close, change names, and let licenses lapse; when we find a mismatch we correct or unpublish the listing.

How We Use AI

We use AI tools to compile listing data from public records and to draft our guides and articles. Humans review listings and editorial content before publication and remain responsible for what appears on the site. AI speeds up the research; it does not replace verification.

Independence

  • Listing in the directory is free. Builders cannot pay to be included, excluded, ranked higher, or described more favorably.
  • We do not take referral fees from contractors.
  • Some articles contain affiliate links to products; these are disclosed and never influence which builders we list or how we describe them.

Corrections

If a listing is out of date — a closed business, a lapsed license, wrong contact details — email us at hello@adubuildersfinder.com and we will verify and correct it. Builders may also contact us to update their own listing; updates are verified against public records before publishing.

What We Are Not

We are a directory and an editorial publication, not a contractor referral service, and nothing here is construction, legal, or permitting advice. Always verify a contractor's license, insurance, and references directly — and check your local ADU regulations — before starting any project.
